We’d like to increase the amount of colleges involved, and we really should be able to gain more based on the amount of engineering colleges out there. If any member has attended one of these local engineering colleges and would like to help, or give a point of contact, we’d like to form relationships between the Chapter and these Colleges, please feel free to contact us.
We have also begun research for what the Student Branches may be looking for from the Boston Chapter itself (what the Chapter can do for the College). Any info would be greatly appreciated.

This scholarship is an excellent opportunity for a senior in H.S., or 1st or 2nd year College engineering students to gain a financial edge on the rising costs of college tuition. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jim Shiminski or Cheryl Rossini.
ASHRAE has a Design Competition that the Chapter will be distributing information on shortly. Keep your eyes open for the info.

If you interested in sponsoring the event, or sponsoring a hole for the outing, please contact Bill Garvey for information.
ASHRAE Research Promotion
We are proud to announce that we’ve met our goal of $14,000 for the year! Please continue to help out and make this one of the biggest R&P years possible. If you’d like to show your support for the Chapter and for ASHRAE’s research, please contact Enrique De Los Reyes for more information on how to help.
Boston Chapter of ASHRAE Sustainability Committee (BASC)
The Sustainability Committee is proud to announce that Fran Boucher has been added as Co-Chair to the Committee! Congrats Fran!
The Sustainability Committee is hoping to have future meeting via video conferencing. If you or your company have video conferencing capabilities and are willing to share your facilities to allow meetings for the Sustainability Committee please let either Jim Shiminski or Dan Cooke know of your interest.
The BASC also discussed the possibility of implementing Carbon Credits for attending the meetings. Carbon credits, which were implemented at the ASHRAE Winter Meetings in Dallas, are payments by attendees for driving to the meeting. It is a payment by attendees for the emissions that their cars are giving off to the environment. The money that is raised goes towards Green research and development.

Attention Past Presidents
The Chapter has located the lost banner that contained the award badges that are received at the end of the season. At the end of each season there are awards given out for certain accomplishments. The Chapter has received many of these badges in years past and we’d like to make sure that all of them have been collected and sewn onto the Chapter Banner. If you have any of these awards, please contact Cheryl Rossini and she will make sure they find their new home with the many other badges.
Upcoming Meetings
The May meeting is for the Installation of Officers. It will also be a technical meeting. Please note that the meeting will be held at the Forefront Center in Waltham, MA and as a result of the different location, we will try to provide the members with directions as well. We will send everyone information when it has been completed. We have submitted the PDH credit information and will let you know of further information when we receive it.
CRC
Each summer, the Boston Chapter sends representatives to the Regional meetings to discuss Chapter operations and vote on upcoming events and rules. This summer the CRC will be held in Niagara Falls.
Chapter Website
We have a new web designer on board and the website will be going through some changes. The new site will be unveiled around the time of the May meeting. If any Chapter members have any requests or ideas for the new website, or if anyone interested in assisting, please contact Steve Rosen for additional information.

What’s New in our Chapter
Meeting Minutes of the Board of Governor’s
March 20, 2007 Meeting
By Bryan Hermanny
Each and every month the Board of Governor’s have a meeting before the technical meeting to discuss the inner-workings of our Chapter. Many members wonder what’s new, what’s being discussed, and what’s being done to make our chapter better.
Below is quick summary of what was discussed:
A Thank you to ASHRAE Society President Terry Townsend
On behalf of all of the Officers, Board of Governor’s, Committee Chairs, and Boston Chapter Members, thank you for spending the time to come out to our Chapter to spread the knowledge and awareness of Sustainability. Your efforts in pushing ASHRAE to the forefront of this critical topic are unparallel and we appreciate the time and dedication you have put forth. Thanks Terry!
Voting Ballot – 2007-2008 ASHRAE Season
Members will see a voting ballot soon to vote on the Officer and Board of Governor’s positions for the upcoming 2007-2008 season. If anyone is interested in getting involved please feel free to contact one of the Officers, Board Members, or Committee members for information.
Scholarships
The “Future Engineers Scholarship” will be given away once again this year. The fundraising for the scholarship was even larger than last year, which may allow additional scholarships to be given out. Jim Shiminski and Cheryl Rossini are once again in charge of the process. If you have any questions, or if you are interested in helping out the cause, please feel free to contact them. Once the information has been released, please keep in mind that the P.O. Box has changed from last year’s application, so please ensure that you are sending the information to the right address. The Chapter will be sending out postcards soon to remind members of this excellent opportunity. You can look for the scholarship info on the website as well. This scholarship is an excellent opportunity for Seniors in High School, or 1st or 2nd year College engineering students to gain a financial edge on the rising costs of college tuition.
ASHRAE has a Design Competition that the Chapter will be distributing information on shortly. Keep your eyes open for the info.
ASHRAE Research Promotion
Each year Research & Promotion has a goal to meet and this year our goal is $14,000. We are proud to announce that we’ve met our goal for the year!
Student Chapters
The Boston Chapter will soon send the annual financial support to each of the Student branches to aide in the purchasing of books, equipment, or any other necessary items to keep the departments ahead of the curve.
The Boston Chapter is currently looking to expand our Student Chapter branches. There are currently three chapters and we’d like to expand farther, and based on the amount of engineering colleges out there, we really should be able to grow in this department. If any member has attended any of these Massachusetts based engineering colleges and would like to help (or at least suggest a point of contact) for beginning a new relationship between the Boston Chapter and these Colleges, please feel free to contact any of the Officers.
We have also begun research for what the Student Branches may be looking for from the Boston Chapter itself, i.e. what the Chapter can do for the College. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
We’re planting trees
The Boston Chapter has worked out a deal with Massasoit College to plant a tree on the college campus. This effort shows a dedication towards the environment by both the Chapter and Massasoit College.
Product and Roster Guide
The Chapter is currently finishing up on the Product and Roster Guide and we anticipate it to be distributed soon. Look for the guides to arrive at your doorstep on or around April 15th!
The April meeting will be on sustainability and will include case studies. It has been submitted for PDH’s and we will inform everyone of the results when we receive them.
The May meeting is for the Installation of Officers. It will also be a technical meeting. Please note that the meeting will be held at the Forefront Center in Waltham, MA. We will send everyone information when it has been completed. We are still finalizing the PDH credit information and will let you know of further information when we receive it.
Chapter Website
The website will be going through some changes within the next couple of months. We have a new web designer on board. We will update everyone on new information as it develops. If any Chapter members have any requests or ideas for the new website, please feel free to contact one of the Board members with your ideas. The new website may be up-and-running as early as this May.
See you at the next meeting!

We encourage all members interested in joining the committee or interested in helping out to join in on the next meeting in December 2006. If anyone has interest in helping out with the committee, please contact a Board member or Committee Chair Jim Shiminski for additional information.
We’re Planting Trees too!
Our industry is constantly discussing ways to help the environment, and ways to make it a cleaner place. As a result, the Chapter is getting involved with planting additional trees at various local colleges. This also shows the other Chapters that the Boston Chapter wants to get involved with the environment’s condition in every way possible. This will all take place within the Spring of 2007.
Upcoming Meetings
Discussions have already begun for the Installation of Officers meeting in May 2007. Initial discussions have been to places such as Naked Fish. Plans and discussions are ongoing, so we’ll keep you informed as it develops.
Also, the Opening meeting for the 2007-2008 season has already been brought up as well. There was a vote on possible locations for the meeting, and it appears as though the TD Banknorth Garden was the winner. Plans and discussions are ongoing, so we’ll keep you informed as it develops.
Chapter Website
The Board has met with the new web designer and we will soon see a transformation of the website. We will update everyone on new information as it develops. If any Chapter members have any requests or ideas for the new website, please feel free to contact one of the Board members with your ideas.

We’ll keep you informed as things develop. If you are interested in helping out, or if you have any questions, please contact Cheryl Rossini.
See you at the next meeting!
President visits NYC Chapter
While on a business trip to New York in October, I decided to take in an ASHRAE meeting at the New York City Chapter. I was accompanied by a co-worker and we were greeted with open arms and were made to feel right at home. It was exceptionally nice to see my ASHRAE colleagues that I only see once a year at our Regional Conference. I want to extend special thanks to Michel Rimpel , the President of ASHRAE New York Chapter, Gary Meyers, District Regional Chair, Eric Glatzl, Past President of the New York City Chapter and all the members of New York City Chapter that made our visit pleasant. They had delicious food, immense energy and highly regarded presentation given by Mr. Peter Funk, Esq.
Mr. Peter Funk, Esq., a partner with Duane Morris Law firm, presented implications of a comprehensive Energy Bill passed by the US Congress in 2005. He discussed specific measures that design, construction, Operations and Maintenance Engineers and Managers would need to take for compliance with the spirit and letter of EPACT 2005. He explained how EPACT relies heavily on ASHRAE 90.1 Energy Efficiency Standards for buildings as a benchmark and requires Federal Facilities to reduce the energy usage by 2% per year and achieve energy usage levels that are below the ASHRAE 90.1 standards by 20% or more by the year 2015. This is a challenging requirement since ASHRAE 90.1 already recommends a highly energy efficient building envelope and buildings systems equipment design and construction. In addition, Federal Agencies are required to procure “Energy Star” equipment and appliances that are designated by FEMP as being in the highest 25% for energy efficiency. EPACT 2005 also stresses more controls and supervisory systems that promote energy efficiency and sustainability in “Operations & Maintenance of Facilities” Commercial Refrigeration equipment, Unit heaters and ceiling fans are required to significantly improve their energy performance. Most States and Municipalities have or in the process of passing similar energy efficiency legislations for State, Municipalities and Schools. Private businesses will be given tax credits and other incentives for energy efficiency initiatives. There would be a greater emphasis on Energy Service Performance Contracts, equipment ratings, lighting improvements so as to deliver performance exceeding ASHRAE Standards.
