June, 2008
Our June meeting took place on June 2nd at the golf outing. That was my last meeting as your Chapter President and I must thank all the Officers, Board of Governors, Committee members and Chairs for another great year for our Chapter.
Together, we were able to again present great programs that our members have asked for and continued to support by turning out in record numbers this year.
We kicked off the year in September with a tour of the TD BankNorth Garden – certainly it was ASHRAE who turned around the Celtics this year and got the Bruins into the playoffs!
In October our sustainability theme for the year had us learn from Jim Horwitz about the potential of fuel cells in the HVAC field to produce clean and green energy production.
In November 141 people listened to Dr Tom Lawrence, P.E. (ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer) talk about Mechanical Design for Green Buildings. RVC of Student Activities Rich Vehlow joined our meeting and awarded a scholarship.
The December meeting speakers Jackson Ball and Sarah Maston discussed exceptionally high efficiency air conditioning chiller applications and construction documents for HVAC pumping and piping systems.
In January Larry Spielvogel (ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer) reviewed ASHRAE Standard 90.1.
The February presentation by Robert Middlebrooks, AIA with Autodesk & Kevin Settlemyre, LEED AP with Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) looked at the current status of Building Information Modeling Software and the integration of engineering tools.
The March meeting about the City of Boston implementing a number of sustainability initiatives for renewable energy and efficiency was presented by the Chief for Environmental and Energy Services for the City of Boston, Jim Hunt.
We had two meetings in April; a tour of Genzyme, a LEED Platinum rated building, and our Product Show at Lantana’s.
Last month we held our first ever Chapter Legacy of Service awards dinner and the Installation of Officers for 2008-2009.
Our website was kicked up in high gear this year and had thousands of hits. Among improvements, we tracked the progress of our Product Show by mapping out booths as they were reserved for vendors.
We continued to have joint meetings with other organizations such as ASPE and AEE. This year we also invited the IES, AIA and Green Roundtable members and their associations to join us – we hope to maintain this synergy with other professional associations in demonstrating that working together is the best method to obtain sustainable design working towards Net Zero energy building projects.
Most exciting of all, this year we added a new Student Chapter, the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Society will vote in this new student chapter at the Salt Lake City Annual Meeting later this month. I’m looking forward to the presentation of the Student Chapter banner next year!
As for me, I accepted to stay on next year as the Research Promotion Chair – so get ready to help me help ASHRAE raise funds. The venture investment in the USA and Europe in 2007 for clean technology reached 5.2 billion dollars – double that invested in 2005 (Boston Globe 5/27/08).Our research can’t be completed unless we have the funding.
It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your President this year. See you at the next meeting!
